Letter to the Editor of the Spokane Spokesman Review in support of Local Solutions to Global Warming
Why am I not surprised? In the recent article titled "Greenhouse emissions measure hits nerve" (Feb. 20), Washington senators opposed to the Local Solutions to Global Warming bill make outlandish claims, such as Sen. Morton's comparison to planning practices in the Soviet Union.
As a recent college graduate who grew up in Spokane, I have little incentive to move back to my hometown if our regional leaders continue to find it acceptable to allow our natural surroundings to be blanketed in monochromatic subdivisions. Why should I come back to a region that doesn't support the way I want to live: in a walkable neighborhood, with a commute via public transit, surrounded by natural amenities?
Climate change is the defining challenge of our generation and land use has a major impact on climate. Giving local government the tools and support to make smart decisions about how we grow means more choices for us and a healthier environment for future generations.
I want to thank Sen. Marr and Sen. Brown for their leadership, and I urge our Inland Northwest representatives to support this measure and others that will ensure our region is a desirable place to live.
Frances E. Bresnahan
