Students
All across the state, students and young people are getting fired up about global warming. The student movement that has been growing in Washington reflects a national movement of young leaders demanding and fighting for a better future.
“As a young person, hell, as a citizen of this earth, I feel compelled to fight against climate change, but I do so not out of fear but out of unfailing hope, out of a definitive optimism that we can stop climate change and in the process bring about a wealth of positive change for everyone on this planet," - JP Kemmick, Pacific Lutheran University '07.
On our campuses and in our communities, students are organizing efforts to transition our state’s economy into one based on clean energy and innovative solutions. Thanks to the hard work of students and faculty, many of Washington’s campuses have switched to 100% green power, local foods in their cafeterias and sustainability in their curriculums. Students are learning new skills and technologies that will help make Washington competitive in the new clean energy economy.
This January, thousands of students, faculty and community members across the state took part in Focus the Nation, an initiative to educate our communities about global warming and to encourage our elected leaders to take real action to address it.
Student groups like the Cascade Climate Network and WashPIRG are working with the 1Sky Washington campaign because we realize that we need solutions that scale to the size of the problem. The work we are doing on our campuses is a critical piece of the puzzle, but we want to be sure our elected officials get the message that we are ready for a change. This is our future and we want to ensure it’s one we can live with!
